THEME OF THE SUMMIT

NEP-2020 lays great emphasis on the use of technology to enhance the access of educational opportunities, address concerns of inclusion and diversity and improve access, quality, equity, affordability and accountability of the educational system in the country.

The summit leveraging the technology for smooth transition from the present language ecosystem to Bharatiya Language ecosystem. With reference to language and technology, the three main areas have been emphasized:

• Technology FOR Bharatiya Languages
• Technology IN Bharatiya Languages
• Technology THROUGH Bharatiya Languages

Technology FOR Bharatiya Languages

This aspect of the theme aims at use of technology for Bharatiya languages in the areas of Teaching, Testing, Training and Translation. Teaching includes learning and teaching of Bharatiya languages in both online and offline modes, development of learning-teaching materials, pedagogy, etc. Testing includes testing methods and tests for different levels of language proficiency in Bharatiya languages. Training refers to training of pre-service and in-service language and subject teachers, master trainers, textbook writers in Bharatiya languages, and training of examiners and experts engaged in language assessment and evaluation using Technology.

Translation aims towards developing and upgrading of Language Translation tools for Bharatiya Languages and also creating vast pool of trained translators in Bharatiya Languages. This would assess technology requirement for translation, developing digital translation manuals and modules in Bharatiya languages, using technology etc.

Technology IN Bharatiya Languages

Technology IN Bharatiya languages is one such area where the Nation is yet to bring major revolution in making hardware and software tools in Bharatiya languages. This means creation of Bharatiya Operating Systems and Machine Learning in Bharatiya languages, use of Bharatiya languages in writing codes and programmes, developing core standards for technological use of Bharatiya languages for universal acceptance, developing multi-layer over the existing OS for Bharatiya languages, web standardization for Bharatiya languages, developing mobile apps and technology in Bharatiya languages, developing AR based platforms, integrating Bharatiya languages, with AR/VR/MVR/Simulation/Digital Twining, and so forth. The main focus would be on bringing all stakeholders in this field together by allocating and localizing resources through continuous development of technology in Bharatiya languages and mainstreaming it.

Technology THROUGH Bharatiya Languages

As envisaged by the NEP-2020 imparting technical education including engineering, medical, legal and other professional courses, THROUGH the medium of Bharatiya Languages. Content and methodology such as digital textbooks, learning-teaching materials, dictionaries, glossaries, assessment, skill courses and technical education through the medium of Bharatiya languages in schools, vocational education institutions, universities and professional education institutions such as IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIMs, IISERs etc. and preparing guidelines and standards for Print and Social Media on using Bharatiya languages.

FOCAL AREAS IN THE SUMMIT

• Exploring ways to provide education through Bharatiya languages with the help of technology.
• Identifying priority areas where Bharatiya language technology tools are needed for all Bharatiya languages.
• Integration of Technology in Teaching, Training, Testing, and Translating educational content in Bharatiya languages.
• Showcasing recent technological developments in the Bharatiya Language Domain. This shall also include Technology Development for Bharatiya Sign Language, and Braille, among others.
• Promotion of Bharatiya languages across all the public and private domains through technological interventions.
• Understanding the current status and challenges of Technology Development For, In & Through Bharatiya languages.
• Ways and means for the future direction for technology For, In & Through Bharatiya languages.

EXPECTED OUTCOME

The Summit will come out with a document on roadmap for development and use of technology For, In & Through Bharatiya languages.
